Three Day Workshop on "Assessing Environmental Change Using Satellite Data"
Dear Students, Parents and Teachers:
The Exciting science Group (
www.excitingscience.org) is running a workshop on "Assessing Environmental Change Using Satellite Data" using GRASS Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software for students between the ages of 12 to 14 years (currently enrolled between Class 6-8).
What is GRASS GIS?
GRASS GIS, commonly referred to as GRASS (Geographic Resources Analysis Support System), (https://grass.osgeo.org/) is a free and open source Geographic Information System (GIS) software suite used for geospatial data management and analysis, image processing, graphics and maps production, spatial modeling, and visualization. The GIS software is downloadable for free from their site.
Aim of the Workshop:
To introduce the tools and techniques to assess environmental changes using remotely sensed data from satellites
To use the open source GIS software for spatial data visualization
To learn the techniques to highlight issues such as urban expansion, changes in forest cover, melting of glaciers, natural and man-made disasters in India and the world
At the end of the workshop, participants will learn about the sources of free satellite data such as data from the LANDSAT series of satellites, data disseminated by NASA and USGS, methods of spatial data visualization and create posters that demonstrate large scale changes in our environment
Registration:
Registration is on a first-come-first-served basis. Thanks to the sponsorship from the Forbes Marshall Foundation, Praj Foundation, K K Nag Foundation and Persistent Foundation this workshop will be run free of cost. However, a refundable deposit of Rs. 500 needs to be paid at the time of registration for confirmation.
We will run one batch of workshop for 21 students.
